Events

From Archive Report 3: 3
"William Newberrie (sic) was one of five Tiffield men mustered in the militia at Towcester in October 1591in response to continuing concerns about the prospect of an invasion by the Spanish that followed the Armada scare of 1588. His small Tiffield group of defenders were armed with a corslet (protective armour for a pikeman) and calliver (matchlock musket)."

From Archive Report 2: 4
"William is recorded in the Tiffield register as taking the role of churchwarden in 1600, 1601, 1609 and 1603. Thomas Newbery served in the same capacity in 1634 and 1640, while Henry was churchwarden in 1637 and 1642. Typically, churchwardens took the role for a year at a time and tended to be chosen from the ranks of the reasonably well-to-do in a community such as artisans and small farmers, for example, rather than labourers. Henry Newberry (sic) of Tiffield was prosperous enough to make a loan of 10 shillings to Parliament in 1643 (ref: Fermor Hesketh Baker 703), and of sufficient status to be listed as a juror for the Hundred of Towcester in 1657 (ref: Quarter Sessions Records of the County of Northampton ed. Joan Wake (Northamptonshire Record Society, 1924)."
