From Archive Report 3: 2
"There is a marriage of 1559 for Thomas Newbery (which fails to mention his wife's maiden surname!) which suggests a slightly different timeline, with William being baptised around, say, 1560-1. This is a possible line of interpretation, in which William's baptism was either not recorded or took place in another parish (a first child was often born and baptised in its maternal grandmother's parish, to which the inexperienced mother returned for help at the time of the birth). On the other hand, the pattern of evidence is odd: the 1559 marriage; the baptism of a single child in 1564; and then burial records of 1598 for Jane and 1606 for Thomas. Such a pattern is perhaps more suggestive of a later, second marriage on the part of the couple in question. It is sometimes possible to extend a family line beyond the time of the parish registers by using other sources, such as manorial documents or taxation records. No manorial documents survive for Tiffield, but I searched the 1542-3 lay subsidy, a tax record, for Tiffield (ref: M156). This record has over twenty taxpayers named at Tiffield, but no Newberys are included among them. This is disappointing and a little surprising, as all the later evidence of the family at Tiffield, like that relating to the performance of parochial offices, points towards its members being of sufficient status to pay local taxes. The other conclusion that might be drawn is that the family were simply not at Tiffield at the time of the subsidy. There is some evidence of this absence in the fact that no Newbery burials were recorded at Tiffield between the start of the registers in 1559 and 1585, when William's first child was buried. A well-established family in a parish would normally be represented by the burials of its oldest generation over such a long period."
